Pinewood Derby Important Information

The Pinewood Derby competition is open to anyone who wants to participate. Below are a few things you need to know.

Races

There will be two types of races, listed below: Families may enter as many cars as there are members in their family, i.e., five members in your family equals five cars.

Regulation Race following the rules below:

  1. Width shall not exceed 2-3/4 inches.
  2. Length shall not exceed 7 inches.
  3. Weight shall not exceed 5 ounces.
  4. Axles, wheels, and body shall be made from the materials provided in the kit.
  5. Wheel bearings, washers, and bushings are prohibited.
  6. No lubricating oil may be used. Axles may be lubricated with powdered graphite or silicone.
  7. The car shall not ride on any spring.
  8. The car must be free-wheeling, with no starting devices.
  9. No loose materials of any kind are allowed in the car.

Modified Race: The only rule for the modified race is that cars must be gravity-powered; they may not have motors, rockets, or engines.

Cars

Where to get car kits: Car kits can be purchased from the BSA Scout shop at 1200 E 5400 S St, Ogden, UT 84403. You can also order a car kit from Amazon. Alternatively, if you have a car you used in the past, dust it off, tune it up, and bring it. Please do not purchase a pre-built, pre-weighted car; half the fun is the agony of building the car yourself.

Prizes

Prizes will be awarded for 1st, 2nd, 3rd fastest cars, and best-designed cars. We will also have a Grand Master trophy for the fastest car between the two wards. What’s a little competition between friends, right?

I don’t want to race.

That’s OK. Come and enjoy watching the races, visiting with friends, and eating pie and ice cream.

Let us know what you want to do.

Let us know that you intend to race and/or bring a pie. Here’s what we need to know:

  1. Number of racers in your family
  2. Names of each racer
  3. Which race bracket (Regulation, Modified, both)
  4. If your bringing a pie.
